Vinification
Roche comes from a single parcel called "La Roche" in Rablay-sur-Layon, in the Layon hills of Anjou. The soil is gravelly and well-drained, giving the Chenin Blanc good structure. The hand-harvested grapes are brought to the urban cellar in La Roche-sur-Yon, where fermentation begins naturally with wild yeasts at 16°C. Only strictly necessary inputs are used: the wine is unfined and lightly filtered. It then ages for 20 months in seasoned 500-litre barrels on its fermentation lees, completing malolactic fermentation. The wood is old and neutral, so the wine develops texture and depth without any oak flavour.
Importer's notes
This is the most serious white in the range, and it shows. Chenin Blanc aged 20 months on lees in neutral wood develops a richness and length that is hard to find at this price. The team at Chai Berteaud-Manceau is two friends from the Vendée: one a terroir specialist with years as a viticulture consultant, the other a winemaker trained at estates such as Château Latour and Cloudy Bay. That combination of field knowledge and cellar precision shows in Roche. It is dry, generous, and long. Good with foie gras, roast poultry, fish, or aged cheese. It will also keep happily for several years.
